Darryl
Jerome Sieker started drawing when he was about eight years old. He was
not professionally trained and did not attend any serious art classes, but like
most boys at a young age, he liked super heroes. He liked Superman, Batman
and the Justice League and drew pictures of them.
Today,
Darryl is 40 years old and has been married to his wife Melanie for sixteen
years. He has two children, a fourteen year old son, Darryl and an eleven
year old daughter, Aubree. Three months of the year and every other
weekend, Darryl's ten year old nephew, Duane, stays with them, calling their
house 'home' as well.
Darryl
still loves to draw heroes, but the heroes he draws now are the ones from the
Bible. As Christmas 2001 approached, his family was not financially
blessed and had very little money for gifts. There were only a few weeks
until Christmas and one night as Darryl slept, he had - or was given - a
vision. The vision was for him to draw. He was to ask the members of
his family what their favorite verse or story from the Bible. So, after
twenty five years, he began to draw again. Hundreds of hours were spent
after work drawing these gifts for his family.
Several
of his first drawings were based on works by a 17th century artist because
Darryl was captivated by the detailed nature of that artwork. However,
Darryl drew larger and more intricate pieces, one example being Darryl's drawing
"The Woman at the Well" (pictured at left). He continues to draw exquisitely
detailed pieces and all originals are 18" x 24", as were his first
works. They include subjects of Darryl's choosing and those that have been
commissioned.
The
response to Darryl's artwork has been tremendous, especially on a personal
level. The drawings have paved the way for Darryl to talk with many people
about Jesus Christ. It has become a way to witness and to deepen his own
relationship with God. Individual testimonies have inspired him. The
experiences of creating these drawings have humbled him. The Lord's
guiding hand continually keeps him in awe.
